The Original King
Although these creature are long extinct, there is still plenty to study when discussing the anatomy of the tyrannosaurus rex, specifically the skeletal system of course. These "Kings of the Dinosaurs" were about 40 feet long and about 15-20 feet long. Its skull alone was around 5 feet, a few inches less than the average person's height! These fierce and savage beasts were known to eat up to 500 pounds in one bite, bones included. The T-rex was believed to have thrived in river valleys in North America until about 65 million years ago when they became extinct.
Some Kings Do Get Up From Their Throne
There have been about a dozen findings of T-rez skeletons, unfortunately none have been completed. Therefore it is only estimated that these creatures had about 200 bones, similarly to us humans. A T-rex's jaw was an average length of up to 4 feet long, with 9 inch teeth. When examining their skull, it is noticed that T-rex are categorized as diapsids, which means that they have two extra holes in the side of its skull.
Movement
Like all other dinosaurs, T. rex were digitigrade, which meant they walked on their toes. Other animals that are digitigrade include dogs, cat, and chickens. There is a pad of tissue on the back of the feet on these animals that acts like a shock absorber. People, bears, and crocodiles walk differently; they are plantigrade (flat-footed). T. rex had three clawed toes on each foot and one dew claw. However not all of the T-rex is vicious and raging. The arms of this dinosaur are very small in comparison to the rest of the body. The upper part of the arm was imbedded in its body, rendering the arms almost useless and with a very limited range of motion. T rex's arms couldn't even reach its mouth.
