Euplectella Aspergillum, or Venus’s flower basket, has delicate "skeletons" made of silica. In the living sponge the skeleton is covered by a thin layer of cells. This sponge is found in a small area of the sea near the Philippine Islands. The sponge’s skeleton is a tube about 10 inches long. A group or fibers at the base attaches the animal to the sea bottom. Species feed on organic material and microscopic organisms that are drawn into a cavity through holes in the wall of the sponge.
